Editors offer many services, from making sure your story is effectively told to fixing errors in language and presentation. Whether you’re still working from an outline or have a manuscript you’re eager to publish, I’m ready to step in and help you along the way.
Services I offer include:
Also known as developmental editing. Could be performed at the end of the outlining phase before your first draft, or as a manuscript review. Includes making sure your story hits the right beats of concept, character, theme, and structure. Each scene will be inspected individually and as a part of the greater whole to ensure it performs its job of moving your story forward.
Also known as line editing, stylistic editing involves reordering and reworking text on a more granular level than structural editing. Your editor will maintain your writing style while making sure your characters sound distinct and realistic, your sentences read clearly, your word choice is correct, and continuity isn’t broken. Can be done as part of a copy edit.
This is what people commonly mean when they say “proofreading.” Involves correcting grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage. Text will be compared to the appropriate style guide and chosen dictionary for proper usage. Copy editing may also involve checking citations and copyright permissions. If provided, a style sheet will be used for consistency; if not, one will be created.
The final step in editing a document, proofreading takes place after the text has been formatted for publishing—be it print, web, or ebook. A proofreader will check for problems in formatting (page numbers, table of contents, photos and illustrations, paragraph and page breaks, etc.) and double-check the editing. It is usually best to have this step done by a separate editor to benefit from a pair of fresh eyes.
For all phases of editing, appropriate change tracking or markup will be used, and comments will be left for the author when explanation, intervention, or rewrites are necessary. Above all else, I strive to ensure the writer is confident that their work is in good hands; communication and collaboration are of utmost importance.
